Six: Valentine's Day

"Mmm... Yes..." Katie groaned, as I kissed her neck, delicately pulling the zipper on the back of her dress down. It dropped down to the floor, revealing a black, lace bra and nothing else. She nimbly unbuttoned by dress shirt, tossing it aside, as I pulled her onto the bed.
"I love you." She smiled, as I unhooked her bra, moving my lips further down my body.
"I love you- mm, yes, oh Harrison!" She
It was my first Valentine's Day in a real relationship; we'd felt so connected after our first date in early winter, we went out on another date, then another, and another. Her humor was divine, her soul absolutely fine. There was no question in my mind about whether or not I wanted to see her again. We'd made things official shortly after the fall semester, but decided against announcing it, because of the holiday stress. Wilson didn't seem to notice anything peculiar and I'm fairly certain Veronica was so focused on the fact that she'd be eighteen and a high school graduate soon, that she didn't care about what her big brother's love life was like.
Two months after we'd officially declared ourselves boyfriend and girlfriend, I still hadn't mentioned it to anyone and neither had Katie. We weren't keeping it a secret, per se, we just weren't broadcasting it.
After out love making -- I never thought that I, a twenty-one year old male would use that term, but it's what it was. It was a collision of love and sparks, it was two souls coming together to be one, it was something that made me wonder Wilson would joke about my testosterone levels, it was so wonderful -- she turned to look at me, her lips curling upwards, her eyes shining.
"So, I hear that Mr. Harrison Hugo Colton has something planned that will absolutely blow me away."
"I supposed it'll have to, after Miss. Katie Jocelyn Dalton literally blew-"
"Hey!" She playfully flicked me, rolling her eyes. "This is why I'm the mature one in the relationship."
"What can I say, I do have a thing for older, mature women." My comment was met with an eye roll, as she stood up and began shrugging on her disregarded garments. She was eleven months and two weeks older than me, a senior in college, while I was a junior. Our birthdays were exactly two weeks apart, it was like it was fate. "As much as I hate to say this, I'm glad you're getting dressed, I supposed I should do the same."
"Where ever we're going probably wouldn't appreciate you showing up nude."
"What if I had commissioned an art student to sketch up that way?"
"Because nothing says I love you like seeing some art nerd draw my boobs."
"Don't worry, we're actually going to the Rose Haven Tea House for brunch."
"Well gosh darn, there goes the surprise." Whenever she was attempting to be over dramatic, she used the childish version of curse words, rather than say shit, she'd say poo, rather than say goddamn, she'd say gosh darn.
"There's still a surprise." I took her hand, as we strolled out of her bedroom, out of the apartment, into the elevator, out of the lobby, and into her car. In a few minutes we were there.

The Rose Haven Tea House had some lure about it being the most romantic spot in the town. It was quaint, run by an elderly British woman, and served delicious scones. It was also were we'd made things official. I led Katie into the garden, as she shivered slightly. Caught up in getting there, neither of us had bother to grab winter coats, which were needed during the frigid New England winter.

"I love you, Harrison, but darling do we have to be freezing our asses off in the snow?" I nodded slowly.

"You know, I had Chinese last week and my fortune cookie said that I'd spend the rest of my life with someone who spilled hot tea on me when we first met."
"Wait, didn't- our first conversa- oh my God!" She looked down, her mouth forming a perfect O.
"Please tell me that's a good 'Oh my God'. Katie, when I first met you... I knew it was you. You were adorable and witty and breath taking all in those first five minutes. As we've grown together, as we've learned more about one another, I've discovered that you're not just adorable, you're mind, body, and soul are gorgeous and they've completely captivated me. I've learned that you're not just witty, you're brilliant and generous and amorous and kind and there isn't anything I wouldn't do for you. I've learned that you don't just take my breath away, you take everyone's breath away the minute you walk into the room. Everyone you meet you manage to inspire, you want to make the world a better place, and I hope I'll be able to travel alongside you and help. I want to be with you every single step of the way and I hope you'll allow me to. Katie Jocelyn Dalton, will you marry me?"
   "Yes."
   "Yes?"
"Yes." She nodded. "Yes, yes, yes! Oh my God, yes, of course... Harrison, God these past two months have been so wonderful and I don't know what I'd do without you, you said that I manage to inspire everyone, yet you inspire me. You want to help people and you're so passionate about caring for your sister and your parents and your best friend... Yes!"

"I know I still have a year of college left and med school, we don't have to do this this year or next, hell we could wait a decade, as long as I get to spend that decade with you, I don't care how long we wait."
"We don't have to wait, I sure as hell can't wait to be Ms. Katie Colton and the summer would be the perfect time for a wedding... I'm going to grad school in the middle of the country and they have a pretty good med school, we could figure something out."
"A summer wedding would be great! And I could always transfer or something."
"Yes! We could get a cute apartment, by great aunt's could go to my cousin... It'd work out absolutely lovely."
We kissed again. We were engaged, with our futures shakily mapped out. There was snow swirling around us and our bodies were freezing, yet in that moment, we didn't need hats or mittens or coats, because our love warmed us.

Six: Nice Guys and Set Ups

   Knock.
   Knock.
Knock. I cursed underneath my breath, as I crouched over the  bathtub, bathing Skedaddles. They'd been knocking on the door, gently at first, then more persistent, harsher for the past few minutes, as I attempted to clean my hydrophobic tabby. Skedaddles yowled as I picked him up, out of the sudsy water, and gently patted him down with a fluffy, eggshell colored towel.

"I'm coming, gods." I shouted, as I stood up, glancing in the mirror. The reflection showed a twenty-four year old who was mildly presentable, which was better then what I had been hoping for, considering that it was nine thirty on a Tuesday morning during winter break and I'd finished working out an hour ago and had yet to change; after coming back to see shards of a hand painted terracotta pot, a gift from a student, and shreds of green stems and orange marigold petals scattered across my bedroom, and my cat, who was acting nonchalant, utterly innocuous, covered in potting soil, showering fled my mind.
   Knock.
   Knock.
I threw opened the front door, forcing a large smile onto my face, despite how exasperated I felt towards the knocker.

"Hel- Officer Ca- Oliver?" I exclaimed, staring at him. He wasn't in uniform; he was dressed casually, in jeans and a coat, a necessity for anyone who was planning on venturing outside and wished to properly protect themselves against the bitter December wind and snow Pittsburgh gifted us with, each winter, his feet clad in dark Converse, as he smiled slightly, a nervous blush overcoming his cheeks.
"Lavender, sorry for just dropping in, but I had something to ask you and..." He trailed off, glancing past me.
"Alright-" I paused, as he glanced at his feet. We hadn't seen each other in months; after the night at his apartment and the humiliatingly tragic morning after I'd  wiped from my mind, there were a few formalities left with the investigation that required my presence, afterwards we never had a reason to meet up, allowing me to avoid thinking of the case, of my biological mother, and anything associated with it, including the police that I had a previous disdain for. "What?"
   "How are you?"
"Fine." Either the question was so spontaneous or inconsiderate that he couldn't have bothered texting me, I was presuming the first, yet if it wasn't, I wouldn't be surprised. "How are you?"
"Good, I'm good. Are you single?"
"What?! Look, Oliver, I-I... I'm sorry, but I can't date you. I couldn't, it isn't, you're nice and damn does being a cop pay, because those abs... I don't know if you thought... That night was months ago, we did nothing, nothing together. I was going to an ex's, I told you that... I, you're kind, but you're a cop, a cop who helped lead the investigation concerning my birth parents, I couldn't; every time I looked at you, every time I see you, I think of the terrible things my biological father did, how my mother abandoned me... I'm working on moving forward, dating you wouldn't help with that... No."

"No, no, no! Not- I- Lavender- Ms. Mums- I wasn't asking you out, er, I mean, not for me."
"Oh..." I blushed, wishing he had interrupted me before the dam had broken and I told him how I felt. "I am." I confessed. I hadn't dated anyone serious since Quinn; I wasn't in love with her, wasn't hung up on her, at first I didn't because of the unwanted publicity I was receiving and after my face ceased making appearances on the nightly news, I just didn't feel like diving back into the dating pool. "Man or woman?"
"Man or wo- Man. I'm sorry; I didn't even stop to consider that you might prefer, that was rude of me, I, damn, I just, I don't normally contact people after I solve their cases, I just... There's this guy, heterosexual, great guy, I know you don't like cops, but he's not really one, he's a 911 dispatcher whose marriage recently, not recent-recently, it's been a few months since it was finalized, four, maybe and he... The holidays are a lonely time and the office is having a party on Christmas Eve, it isn't a Christmas party, it's non-affiliated, so that way everyone feels comfortable, I-"
"Oliver." I interrupted his speech, a speech that made a train wreck seem better then this awkwardness. "Do you want to set him up with me?"

"Yeah. Sorry for the spiel; it's been awhile since I've asked a woman out. Are you, do you like men? If you don't, I didn't mean to appear r-"
"I do." I sighed, wondering if I should divulge my orientation to him. It wasn't a large deal to me, I didn't keep it secret from people, if you excluded my parents, yet I still wasn't sure. "I'm bi, though, so I'm fine with him, but if he isn't accepting of that, I'd like to know before so I don't have to go through anything unnecessarily unpleasant."
"He should be; I'll ask. The party starts at nine Thursday, at the station, I apologize for the short notice, I was buying discount Hanukkah decor, since it ended a few days ago, and I saw your building and I have a pretty good memory and thought that you lived here and figured, why not stop in."
"Mmkay, I'll be there, if he's not an intolerant as- intolerant, I'll be there. How dressy is it?"
"Eh, it ranges from business casual to semiformal, depending on age and salary. I'll probably be in khakis and a button down, my boss' boss will probably be in a navy suit, my female coworkers will probably be in pantsuits or nice dresses."
"Alright; thanks." I smiled, as he exited my apartment; we weren't friends, we were barely acquaintances, inviting him in for coffee and smalltalk seemed like it would appear a bit peculiar, a bit awkward. "What to do, what to do..." I murmured to myself. Shower, first, decide what to have for lunch, see if I had any outfits that would be appropriate for an City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police holiday party, mentally prepare myself to go on a blind date, ask Sandi and Quinn- was I aloud to ask Quinn for help, despite our past relationship that had ended close to eight months ago? The party was soon; I didn't have long to decide.

Six: Read this Letter When You Lie

"Thank you for showing me around town." I said, attempting to twist my face into a what I hoped looked like a smile. He's going to get you. Come after you. He's luring you into a trap. The voices tell me, as I begin tapping my thigh with my index finger, hoping to sooth the anxiety. Sooth the voices. Bad. Stupid.
"No problem... Let me take you out to lunch; we've had a long day."
"I... I have to go... The movers, they-" He can tell you're lying. He knows.
"Oh... Well, do you want to call them? You can use my cell phone."

"Okay." I said, taking it. He might be using it to track you. Track you. Hunt you down. Run! Hide. I stared at the phone, unsure of what number to dial; there was no moving company. He's looking at you. He sees you, indecisive. I dialed the first one eight hundred number I could think of; the one I had memorized by heart, the last phone call I had made before running. Before hitch hiking to here. Let's hope he wasn't tracking me, wasn't in cahoots with them.
   "Pittsburgh Support Line how-"
"Yes, can you postpone the delivery? Yes, I, Sylvia Griffin. From Phoenix. Yes, Arizona."
   "Pardon, madame, are you alright?"
"You lost it! In shipping? All my belongings, all my clothes, my memories. Replace? You can't replace sentimental things, the photos, my high school yearbook, my mother's wedding veil!" I began rambling off every nonexistent item I could thing of, angry words spouting from my mouth. I didn't have any possessions being shipped here from Phoenix, or anywhere else in the country, or world, for that matter; this was the best excuse I could think of. The voices complimented me on my quick thinking, as the support line lady spoke in a hushed tone, attempting to calm me down.
"Is everything okay?" He mouthed, concern filling his face.

"No." I mouthed back, shaking my head, to the lady I simply said: "Well, I don't give a damn if I signed it. Why, I- No! Ugh, don't you- Bye." Acting defeated, I couldn't remember what that emotion felt like, now knowing if people still felt it, I hung up, deleting all recent calls so he couldn't call them back, handing him back the phone.
"Did the company lose your possessions?"
"Yes and they said they couldn't compensate me due to the fact that I signed some waiver thing. I lost my job, so I moved here as a safety net, my savings account I... I don't know, Luke." I looked as his face, realizing that I'd misspoken. "Linus. Mr. Levanoid. Sorry."
"Please, call me Linus and it's fine; you're stressed."
Bad, you. Bad, bad, bad. Lying to him, he feels bad for you, yet everything you made up was a brilliant lie. Good lie. Good! The voices say, over, over, over, and over again. I had to lie, you shouldn't lie, it's bad, no, no, don't lie. I have to lie. The voices say so, I'm protecting me, protecting you... If, I... I had, I have to. I won't apologize for doing what I had to in order to survive.
   "I..."
   "I'll replace everything."
"Pardon?" He couldn't; I didn't know him, he might be working for them, I didn't even own the cabin, technically someone could buy it any day, leaving me without a place to squat and with winter coming... "I, I think I'm moving."
"You are?! You just got here."
"I need a fresh start, I'm going to lose the house..." I kept lying, making up stories to keep him at bay. He stood there, a trust fund baby who had never been exposed to the harshness of the world, who'd be taught that if you throw enough money at a problem, it'll disappear.

   "Move in with me."
"NO!" Bad. Bad. See, it was a trap, it was, see? He's luring you in, he'll hurt you, harm you. "Gah, er, I mean, you barely know me; I couldn't abuse your kindness, you've already shown me around town..."
"Look, you seem like a nice person who happens to be a bit unlucky. I want to help; my parents bought me a McMansion, I have more space then I know what to do with..." Replace bit with extremely unlucky; that would describe the situation. Maybe, bad man.... Bad.
"I'll consider it." I said, biting my lip.
Sometimes you have to lie, to protect yourself, to save someone's feeling, to please the voices in your head... Please, don't make a habit out of it, if you don't have to...

With Love,
   Sylvia Griffin
